Effective
and Consistent training to 'Contract management
system'
Situation
The company is a U.S. based manufacturer of petroleum
and petrochemical products, and has approximately
3,900 retail gas outlets in 18 states. The company
needed to effectively manage the maintenance, capital
and turnaround projects it executed on its refineries.
These projects were executed mainly by contract
craftsmen. The correct allocation of resources,
oversight of the work done by contractors, logging
their efforts and recommending payments became critical
to this part of the company’s business.
To manage these work processes, the company was
introducing a new industry best practice software
application that would make the contract management
system more robust and effective. Classroom sessions
were being held to introduce the application and
communicate its benefits to its users.
Need
Imparting effective and consistent training to
the personnel involved in the contract management
process was a mission critical activity for the
company. The company intended to move to a more
organized, timely and preparatory approach to
training.
Solution
We engaged with the company in rolling out an
organization wide learning initiative. In the
first phase of the engagement, we conducted an
analysis session wherein the business goals of
the company for the learning initiative were identified,
corresponding performance goals defined and the
learning objectives outlined. In the Analysis
session, it was identified that an eLearning solution—End
User Application Training, would be the right
approach to delivering the intended training.
In the second phase, based on the outputs of
the analysis session, we designed and developed
an elearning course that was highly interactive,
and used a task-based approach. The elearning
solution consisted of components that
• Set
a context for the training • Used
real life problems and everyday situations
to outline the software’s main features
and demonstrate how the
application is beneficial to the users
• Not only "showed"
the learner how a task is to be accomplished,
but also provided them an opportunity to practice
in a safe environment. • Tested
the learners on their understanding of the
software features, benefits and their ability
to use the application on
given tasks through a comprehensive assessment

Outcome
The application training was rolled out across
the company’s refineries in the U.S.
To quote the Project Lead and IT manager of
manufacturing systems "They have helped
us reduce our cost and time involved in classroom
sessions. Our people are now able to access
learning 24X7 and we are seeing positive results
of using eLearning to accompany the product
rollout". The company has further engaged
with us for other learning initiatives. |
